Neuromuscular Rehabilitation for Gait Training with Cyborg

Rare neuromuscular diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy, spinal bulbar muscular atrophy, muscular dystrophy, and congenital myopathy lead to the consequent loss of ambulation.  Thus Cyberdyne treatment with the Wearable Cyborg™ HAL helps in improving the ambulatory function of these patients.

Cyberdyne Treatment uses Wearable Cyborg™ HAL® to restore the functions of the wearer. The treatment targets spinal cord injury, stroke, neuromuscular diseases, etc.

Cyberdyne HAL® is a robot that can improve the user’s physical capabilities, mainly for people with difficulty moving around. By monitoring the user’s centre of gravity and direction of movement, HAL improves the user’s physical mobility.

Cyberdyne – HAL® lets the user control the movement with his/her mind. The artificial limb would use a setting similar to an electroencephalogram to connect the message from the patient’s brain to the nerves under the skin and interpret those messages as its orders. This process, over time, revives the nerves responsible for voluntary gestures. Eventually, the nerves are strong enough for the patients to be able to walk again on their own.

This leads to “the important first step” in walking the physically challenged individual without being assisted by HAL. The Wearable Cyborg™ HAL® is designed for treatment to improve patients’ physical functions.

HAL steps in the treatment of Neuromuscular diseases

  • Establishes a healthy loop of signals
  • Is made to fit right
  • Is controlled by Wearer’s Intent
  • Supports the ‘journey to independence

Recovery/Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation robots in physical therapy ensure that the neuromuscular exercises are performed accurately. The Wearable Cyborg™ HAL helps support the stroke patient’s body weight so that patients can participate for periods before tyring. They measure improvements and provide the assessment.

The Wearable Cyborg™ HAL® therapy aims to increasingly activate muscle impulses and with this enable an interactive neuronal feedback loop. The therapeutic successes are a result of this feedback effect. Within the course of the training, the ability to walk is improved as regular repetition helps patients to regain their motion patterns.

This feedback therapy leads to a significant gain in muscular strength. Patients affected with neuromuscular disease, continuing to actively use their regained mobility in everyday life will retain the progress they have made by the end of the neuromuscular feedback therapy.

Cyberdyne technology using the Wearable Cyborg™ HAL® is an innovative treatment technology that enables the improvement of human brain-nerve-musculoskeletal functions by activating the body’s self-healing ability that humans are naturally in possession of. The most effective rehabilitation is specific to the skills the patient needs, and of sufficient intensity and duration to truly retrain the nerves and muscles involved.

The Hybrid Assistive Limb – The Wearable Cyborg™ HAL®, facilitates voluntary, user-driven ambulation through a neurologically-controlled system based on bioelectrical signals derived from the user. This allows for the repeated execution of physiologically faithful gait patterns, needed for recovery in cases of neurologic motor deficit.
